Thiruvempavai - 15 : Bodily Symptoms of True Devotion

The New Year 2023 is sure to have brought with it surprises, pleasant and unpleasant. The continuous mystery of what might unfold tomorrow is what keeps our lives interesting, I believe. The unchangeable past still has got the keys to change our future, by acting on the lessons right in the present. This threaded running of time, connecting the beads of life, becomes an ornament to the vastness of Human History. As we move into a New Calendar Year, beyond just praising and singing the name of the Lord, let's also act on his behalf, through kindness and love. With that, lets take a minute to think about Manickavachakar's Nectar, Thiruvempavai stanza 15.

The Verse

Translates to

The woman sings about how devotion has transformed one among them, and the experiences she has gained simply by thinking of the name of Lord Shiva. Upon hearing the word "Emperuman" (My Lord), the woman loses consciousness and falls to the ground in worship, her eyes flooded with tears. She bows down not even to the celestial beings, but only to the King of all Kings, the Lord. So dear women, let us dance in the name of the one and only Lord who can enslave a soul with this kind of compassionate mastery and save it from darkness.

The Message

When you are devoted to something, whether it be a material possession or a person, the mere thought of it can change you in some way. This is especially true when it comes to those we love, like a spouse or children, when if they are far away. Our connection with them is so strong that our body reacts to memories of them. Our body is not just a vessel for our life, but also a device that can help our soul experience a connection with souls from other planes. As we become more spiritually aware and mature, our body becomes a connecting device for experiences that go beyond emotions. No matter what religion we follow, the thought of the Lord can cause us to shake, tremble, and cry out loud. That is exactly what was experienced by Saint Manickavachakar, and is being depicted in this stanza. This is what made Rev. G.U.Pope fall in love with Thiruvachakam and Tamil language.

Stay blessed and see you next time with stanza #16.
